Do you know what the third biggest shopping day of the year is? Believe it or not, it is Mother’s Day. Third only to Christmas and back to school shopping, 20 Billion Dollars are spent on our Mothers! Mother’s Day got its start in the United States by Anna Jarvis in 1908. Anna Jarvis wanted to commemorate the sacrifice that all mothers make for their children after her own mother died in 1905. She campaigned to get financial backing from a store owner named John Wanamaker in which she succeeded. In May of 1908, she organized the first Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. Mr. Wanamaker also enjoyed the thousands of people who came to his stores to purchase gifts for their mothers! Ann Jarvis pushed for this day to be put on the national calendar. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure declaring the second Sunday in May to officially be Mother’s Day.
Anna Jarvis envisioned Mother’s Day as a day to honor one’s mother. But, after seeing how the florists, card companies, and retail stores capitalized on the day, she campaigned again to get the day removed the national calendar! The day remains on the calendar and, therefore, we honor our mothers every year by spending 20 Billion Dollars. Sorry, Anna, but we do.
So whether you look for personalized gifts for mom or you give her a cherished homemade gift, Mother’s Day is a day looked forward to by every mom. Sometimes ‘Dad’ has to step up, recognizing that your wife either is, or could be, a mother someday. So do the right thing, and be proactive. Provide for a cool and personalized gift for her. Make the idea unique and gifted from the whole family.
